So really awesome imagery capping with the Daenerys/Drogon’s wing image. Also for setting up a palpable feeling of dread. Up until Dany got got, I felt like anyone could die at any moment. I liked the episode entirely up through this point. One of Emilia and Kit’s best scenes. I thought her death played out naturalistically with Jon being the one to do it. (I absolutely loved the amazing imagery. That will go down as one of the coolest images they ever did on the show.)

Jim: I liked the way the scene was done. As Chris said, it was set up so you felt anyone could die at any point. Dany seemed invincible, Jon, Tyrion and the rest seemed defeated to their fate. The plan was hatched as a last effort of a dead man imp. Who knew if Jon would do it…. the scene really played out beautifully. She needed to go, and I can’t really imagine a better way. (The feeling of constant dread up to her death was incredibly executed. The payoff of all the unexpected deaths for 8 seasons paid off big time here.)

Raylene: I thought it was done well I guess at that point you needed more of an intimate death. She had gotten so power hungry and thought she was untouchable at that point. (In my head, I wanted something bigger, but this worked on numerous levels. With everything being so big this season, the biggest death being this intimate was a nice way of handling it.)

Chris B.: I think so. Jon loved her and didn’t want to do it, but knew he had to. I think he wanted her to know that. That being said, I wish she had said something about Sansa bending the knee or else, which would have forced Jon’s hand. (Now that you mention it, a bit more trash talking from Dany would have been solid.)

Johnny: I thought her death before Drogon burned the throne was well done from an emotional stance. As a viewer being connected to Dany, even though she went mad queen in the end. I was sad to see her go. But having Jon kill her I believe was of course the best person to do the deed. ???? (I think for Dany fans, Jon killing her was probably the most acceptable murderer, or possibly Jorah, had he survived.)

Kent: This worked really well given the circumstances. Would i have preferred Sansa or Arya torturing her to death…..of course I would have. I used to be a big fan of Dany before my eyes were opened around season 4. Then it became that I was more excited to see Jorah. I don’t think that Dany deserved this dignified of a death. She was a shitty person. Still, the caveat of within the context of this season, it worked. Jon should definitely fall in love with more women in the future. Drogon melting the throne was the best part.

2. Dany’s death was the only major one in this episode. Were you happy with that or would you have preferred more death?

Chris T.: In a way I am glad so many characters got to live, but by all rights more should have died. (Yeah, they didn’t owe it to us, but geez, it was like a swerve or twist in a movie that didn’t necessarily need to happen.)

Jim: I really expected more heads to roll, but I liked the outcomes presented by the episodes. This never gave the “Jim was right” opportunity I wanted. It was a little optimistic for a dark so as it was though. (It sucks because I had hundreds of “Jim was right” shirts made. On the plus side, my “Jim was wrong” shirts sold out in minutes.)

Raylene: I think we had enough deaths this short season. (I would love a death toll because I am unsure how the Dothraki and Unsullied math work.)

Chris B.: I was fine with it. Dany was such an important character, it was fitting the finale episode revolved around only her and her death. (I read that as “an impotent character” and I was nodding my head, then thought that you wouldn’t have written that. So sad….terrible day.)

Johnny: Dany being the only main death was fine, but definitely surprising not seeing more for GOT. Then again season 8 didn’t feel much like GOT to begin with. :/ I think I enjoyed episode 2 the most as to watch one as a stand-alone, then episode 5… The rest honestly I was a sadly disappointed. (I think episodes 1 & 2 were possibly my favorites of the season, although 4 made me laugh the most.)

Kent: Dany probably should have killed a big character in a public execution. Then when Jon killed her, it would have felt like a bigger “fuck you, Dany!” moment. And that is the thing, Dany deserved a much bigger fuck you than she got. I would have had one more big death, and it would have been Arya. It’s not like her presence added anything aside from embarrassment in the latter half of the episode. I feel that Dany’s death got romanticized, and it kinda pisses me off, in hindsight.

3. Given the 6 episode limit, for whatever reasons, was this as good of a way to end it given what they left us with at the end of the previous episode? Also, now that we have hindsight, would you have preferred a normal 10 episode season?

Chris T.: After I watched this, I said we didn’t get the ending we deserved, but the best one we could have after episodes 3-5. Ten episodes for both season 7&8 would have nailed it. The compression killed plotlines, created plot holes, and hurt more than helped. (And this is why I argue that not only was Breaking Bad a better TV series, but this is on the level of the Walking Dead now, given the past 2 seasons. Chris didn’t agree with me. I guess you’d have to listen to Kenter At Your Own Risk if you want to hear how it played out.)

Jim: I liked the episode, but really felt this season needed at least 2 maybe 3 more episodes. The last episode itself should have been 2 or 3 episodes. One ending with Danys death, one with the events of the meeting and all events leading up to it (who reached out to set the meeting, with no ruler in King’s Landing. Who decided to wait to execute Jon and Tyrion…. and many more questions), and one for the aftermath…. we easily could have made the long night a second episode as well. I didn’t hate the story, we just needed finer brushstrokes. (For a show that has done pretty good with details, by and large, they clearly were clueless on the finer points the past 2 seasons. We can all blame George.)

Raylene: I would’ve liked longer season spent more time with the battles especially The Night King and The King’s Landing. (Yeah, I would have enjoyed a bit more Night King, myself.)

Chris B.: Overall, while I have some issues, I am ok with how it ended. I am definitely not a fan of the shorter seasons. If they had spent more time on several storylines, I feel that most people wouldn’t be upset and think everything was rushed. (I am not usually a fan of people bitching about artistic decisions, but in this case, shorter seasons robbed the fans and the show of better things and I have yet to hear a reasonable argument to the contrary.)

Johnny: It upsets me that we had the opportunity to do more episodes but for whatever “brilliant” reason they brought it down to 6. I would’ve most definitely preferred to have 10 episodes. These characters and this story we’ve been invested in deserve a worthy ending. Having just 6 was simply not enough time and clearly season 8 was beyond rushed. *sigh*

I wish I could say I wasn’t disappointed but I also wish they didn’t rush it for some ambiguous unspoken reason. (That sums up so much of what we are all feeling man. The “brilliant” reasons are clearly above my rationalization.)

Kent: The seventh and eighth season being shortened was such a bad move. We said it then, we said it during, and in hindsight, we can see how this story could have been told better with more time. We didn’t really get to explore Sansa much this season, or Varys, or Bronn, etc. This was about as good of an ending that we could expect given what they left us, but that doesn’t get them off the hook for not giving a more fleshed out story and season. It surely shouldn’t have been budget. The single most talked about TV show of the year.

4. Soooo Tyrion is now the “Hand” for a third time. Did he deserve this position? Should it be considered an honor or a duty?

Chris T.: Tyrion had the best and the worst scenes this episode. His scene in the cell with Jon was maybe my top scene in the whole series. His scene at the trial was absolutely fucking retarded. More on that later. And I really liked the small council scene. (I’m just gonna nod. We were in agreement on this whole thing. That scene with Jon was a piece of art. That trial scene was a piece of shit.)

Jim: Who else has his ability and moral grounding. Bran is so logical, he is kind of terrifying, so having a human/moralist Tyrion grounding him makes sense. Is there a better choice? Maybe Davos or Sam, but I don’t think Tyrion is undeserving. (I think Davos is the only one who could make a compelling case, but Tyrion was raised to know so much of the inner workings. Davos was probably great in other ways. Tough call. It’s like splitting my nonexistent hairs.)

Raylene: To me it’s more of a punishment for his mistakes he made now it’s time for him to pay the Piper. (I wasn’t sure whether to go with a Rowdy Roddy Piper video or this gem that needs to be in a good horror movie. I went with creepy song for obvious reasons because in some way, Tyrion was a bit of a pied piper.)

Chris B.: I think Bran made him hand to atone for his mistakes. Plus, despite everything that has happened, Tyrion is one of the few good people on the show. (I’m still holding a Varys sized grudge, but I do agree with you. Best intentions type situation. Good thing that Bran doesn’t have any Samuel L in him. I just pictured Bran pulling off this scene and it made me giggle.)

Johnny: This is one of the only character arcs and resolution I was happy with. He’s been hand of the king in King’s landing before for Joffrey and then, of course, for Dany… he’s proven he can definitely be a great hand. And now he is under Bran’s rule who is arguably the lesser crazy than his previous leaders. I think with that he will have more freedom to do more good. (I would love to do a blog about Bran and the possibilities of craziness that could be in the future.)

Kent: Tyrion accepting it is his penance for screwing over Varys. Had the rules been anybody aside from Bran, meaning someone who can’t see the future, then I would be more against this. Obviously, Bran is cool with it. I think Tyrion will try to do right by the Realm, and that is the most important. Not only that, Tyrion was the most realistic choice. Davos is a distant second. Tyrion does have some experience with the role and had good intentions, by and large. This should be considered a duty and not an honor.

5. So Jon is held captive and the compromise was for him to be the leader of the Night’s Watch because they wanted to avoid more war. 1. How many Unsullied and Dothraki were remaining to make this a reasonable war whatsoever? 2. Was this really Jon’s calling all along? 3. What purpose does the Night’s Watch serve with the Night King being dead…..deader…….not existing anymore?

Chris T.: All the Dothraki died, until they needed more plot wise. Same with the Unsullied. And they took off before Jon did. Like wtf? Hey dude pretend until Grey Worm the psycho leaves and then we’ll let you go. Maybe if Yara had actually participated instead of running away Euron might not have been able to kill Rhaegal and capture Missandei, which means, who knows maybe Jon wouldn’t have had to kill Dany. Jon’s purpose was to be Westeros’s Jesus and sacrifice both himself and his piece of ass to save everyone else. There is no point for the Night’s Watch anymore. They were designed to protect the 7 Kingdoms from the Others, and later from the Wildlings as well; since the Others are dead and the Wildlings allies, it’s a pointless position. Probably part of the reason Mr. Honor and Duty Targaryen took off with his homey’s. (We can just blame Gendry for crafting such high quality plot armor.)

Jim: It was a fair compromise to send him away, even though it’s a pointless assignment. I do think there were enough remaining of Dany’s forces to make it a fight, but not sure it was enough to win. And I’m not really sure the North deserved to fight another battle.. I do think Jon was best served as the lord commander of the Night’s watch. He was better there than anything else he did. So he ended where he belonged. (Jim, I rarely get a chance to say this, but god damnit, I just can’t agree with the “fair compromise” part of your statement. The dude was a hero and potentially rightful king by various metrics. WIth that being said, I agree with everything else.)

Raylene: For some reason it seemed so outlandish to me that there was that many that survived. When you saw them with Dany . I thought at least almost all the Dothraki perished. Jon seemed to be a pleased to me in the end scene going out with Tormund. Perhaps the Night Watch is now served as a punishment if you commit a crime. (We saw in the beginning of ep 4 how many got got in the burning scene. So we know that they were dead. I think we have new Wights on our hands, and THAT is why we needed a Night’s Watch.)

Chris B.: 1. Ok, this was bothering me for 2 episodes. I know a bunch of unsullied survived, but where did all the Dothraki come from? They went from being 95% dead to a big army. 2. I think the real north is where Jon belongs. He can protect people without politics coming into play. 3. I almost think it was a ploy to keep the Unsullied from starting a war. Jon didn’t even stay with the Night’s Watch, he left with the wildlings. (Without Jon, I wonder which side would have won that fight? If you say that Davos and Grey Worm cancel each other out, I’m taking Arya, Brienne, and Bronn against the rest of the crew, dead or alive. But it would be compelling hypothetical TV. We need a “What if?” device like they had in Futurama.)

Johnny: This was one of the biggest problems I had with the ending. We’ve seen both Dothraki and Unsullied have most of their numbers decreased severely low, but when the plot needed them they were there just because the story said so… (I am just happy that I finally found a question that seemingly perplexed everybody as much as myself.)

With Jon going to the Night Watch… first of all, there really isn’t a Night Watch because most of it’s been clearly destroyed from the army of the dead… second of all, if Grey Worm is the only person having a problem with Jon… why not just let him leave then bring Jon back instead of for some reason send him to the conveniently full running crow/wildling night watch. (You mean just tell Grey Worm one thing and then 5 minutes after he leaves, just let Jon be Jon again? Nope….that is way too fucking reasonable.)

Just like when Jaimie killed the mad king #BurnThemAll he was pardoned from Robert Baratheon… I think it was honestly lazy writing and did not think it was a good ending for Jon.

Even Kit Harrington when asked how he’d describe season 8 in one word he said… “ Disappointing”. (Word(s) to live by!)

Couldn’t have said better myself Kit. haha

Kent: I am glad that almost everybody was on the same page with me. This was beyond illogical. I don’t know if this was more illogical than Dany’s forces getting blindsided by Euron, it could be a 1A and 1B type situation. We were told that most of the Dothraki got got at the Battle of Winterfell. Each week since that episode, I swear they grow the army exponentially. It makes zero sense. Also, a good chunk of Unsullied died and I think their numbers have also increased in size. I wish somebody would have brought this up during the writing process. They left, so who really wanted Jon to be sent to Bumfuck, The Wall? Everybody could have just been like, they’re gone, you’re cool now. You can stay in Winterfell or wherever. Because everybody had their heads up their asses, Jon basically is giving everybody a giant middle finger at the end. I truly cannot believe the disservice that they did to him. Yes, he was the best choice to run the Night’s Watch except there wasn’t a need for it anymore. This was the dumbest shit and everybody involved should be shamed.

6. Arya is going to become an explorer. Was this really her best case scenario? Was this a huge letdown for you?

Chris T.: Wow pointless. She might as well have not been in it after the battle for Winterfell. (Her dying could have had more impact after ep 3 than her living. There were plenty of opportunities too.)

Jim: It was a letdown, as I did see her on the throne, or minimally she could have been the master of whispers. Going full Dora the Explorer seems to be a set up for another series (though they claim not). She’s not a lady, and wouldn’t have liked ruling, but there were many other things she could have done well. (She was one of the few multi-talented individuals remaining who was great at several things. Instead…..well we’ve all seen the memes.)

Raylene: It definitely was a let down seems like they could have done something more with her. (Gendry is still a sad panda.)

Chris B.: It’s a little bit of a letdown, but there’s not much else for her to do. Everyone on her list is dead. Plus, when she was in Braavos, I think she talked to someone about exploring west of Westeros. (Yup, there was that one whole scene and that is what the writers based this nonsense off of. A huge, major character, and that is what they leaned on. So lazy! I am perhaps the laziest MF’er you know, and I am proclaiming that to be lazy.)

Johnny: Ehh. It was fine but I don’t see why she can’t just ask her brother King Bran the Broken a.k.a. the three eyed raven to see what’s “ west of Westeros” . ???? (Here we go with Johnny trying to insert logic into the situation. Silly man. Bran has important things to do, like theorize where Drogon is going, instead of warging into Drogon and saving King’s Landing.)

Kent: Really? Really? Realllllly? Come the fuck on here with this noise. I know that Dora the Explorer is getting all of the jokes, but Russell Crowe in South Park deserves the shine more. Because he fights around the world on a boat. Seriously though, Dany should have killed Arya to start the episode with Arya trying to assassinate Dany. Public execution and that would have pushed Jon over the edge and given Sansa some more ammo. Arya’s character would have had more impact on the episode and lasting legacy as well. SHAME!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3EAUDcZrN8

7. Sansa stuck to her position and The North is its own ruling entity. Do you think that this actually brings her happiness or serenity? Will she be happy just ruling the North and staying out of all the other politics of Westeros?

Chris T.: So wtf people. All of my problems stem from the trial/council meeting. First of all, Tyrion is on trial; let’s take everything the person on trial has to say as if it is wiser than any of his other stupid ideas over the last several seasons. And I can only wonder how the other 6, more populous kingdoms, sat back and were like, yeah, okay you leave but we will all stay. (For a show all about politics and ruling, at the end of the day, the other 6 kingdoms didn’t want independence? Seriously? This whole thing makes me want to punch something.)

Jim: I know that is what she said she wanted, but you know Sansafinger wanted the crown (minus the throne…. thanks Drogon, you dick). As Chris said, once she left the Seven, I’m not sure why others didn’t follow suit. I do not believe she will simply keep to herself…. there will be meddling. (Yeah, Drogon doesn’t enough flak for burning down that uncomfortable hunk of metal.)

Raylene: Sure Sansa is The Queen of the North I don’t think she ever really wanted to go back to King’s Landing. (She didn’t have a great time there, but will she get back with Tyrion?)

Chris B.: Yeah. Something tells me she’s had enough “fun” at kings landing. (I don’t think enough gets said about how shitty Sansa’s role has been in this who series. I watch some horror movies that take shit for how bad a woman is treated, but Sansa beats all of them except for possibly the chick in Martyrs.)

Johnny: Yes, Ned and Cat I can imagine would be very proud of her. They’d be proud of all the Stark children for that matter… Even Theon. (I have nothing to add other than I truly hated Cat. I could not get behind her character at any point. I need to read the books to see if my opinion changes.)

Kent: This one hurts my head so much. There are so many analogies to me made here, but seriously, the other 6 kingdoms didn’t want freedom? No, they were cool still serving a king? Seriously? Good for Sansa, I guess. She owned that scene better than anyone else. She may actually find happiness in staying in the North. I think this is the peak of her ambition. I think that she learned that being the ruler of the seven kingdoms…….six kingdoms, isn’t worth it. I guess it would be back to 7 if she went for it, perhaps.

8. Bran had THE big moment as he is now the king. Really, only 3 people got that right in last week’s blog. Was this the best case scenario for Bran? With everybody knowing his powers, nobody will be dumb enough to try to usurp his crown, right?

Chris T.: Bran as the king is the biggest fucking joke in the series. He can’t see the future, he can only see what he concentrates on, and if it is anything like the books he can’t see anything in King’s Landing since there are no Weirwood trees there. He’s not even really human anymore. And if he could warg Drogon and didn’t before, all the deaths can be blamed on him as well. (Yup, it’s one of those things where if you think about it, Bran could have saved so many lives, but he chose not to.)

Jim: He and his detached personality have the possibility of being a terrifying ruler. Just because he can see the present and past, does not mean he knows how the future is, and could be based on his decisions…. and since he is not attached to reality, I could see him saying,”Just level the Twins” or “Riverrun doesn’t need is dam” without care for its implications. (Bran is terrifying and I just wish they would have given us a glimpse into that potential.)

Raylene: Sure Bran shall rule just fine I think he should be able to see any problems and squash it right away. (But what if he’s a great big phony?)

Chris B.: Despite it seeming kind of out of left field, he seems like the best choice to rule. He doesn’t let emotions guide him, he can see all the mistakes and success of the past, and he has no true desire for power. (Or does he? The conspiracy theorists are hard at work. Bran let all of that shit go down knowing that he could have helped, but then he isn’t the king. Was he pulling a Keyser Soze all along?)

Johnny: It makes sense I suppose… I personally think he would of been a much better master of whispers lol I personally wish we had Gendry on the throne with Davos as his hand. But I get why they chose Bran. (You should have written this last episode. Everything about that makes me far happier.)

I look forward to George R.R. Martin’s explanation of who ends up on the throne. His version definitely won’t be rushed so I like it more already. ????

Kent: “The greatest trick the Three Eyed Raven ever pulled was convincing the world that he could see into the future.” If you don’t know that quote, finish reading this blog and then go watch The Usual Suspects for one of the all time greatest films. Meera Reed must be so happy for Bran. As Chris and I suggested in the podcast, we hope that her and Jon end up together so she can rub it in Bran’s face. Meera Reed got no F’N love and without her, Bran never accomplishes anything.

9. Please rank the 4 Starks (Jon, Sansa, Bran, & Arya) in order of how happy you are with how their story ended. 1 Is happiest and 4 was the most underwhelming.

Chris T.: Sansa the other 3. Jon got fucked, Bran fucked everyone else, and Arya might as well have cut out at episode 3.

Jim: Jon, Bran, Sansa and Arya…. Jon is where he’s probably happiest, Bran is more useful there than literally anywhere else, and Sansa gets to rule something…. then there is our explorer…. could have been so much more.

Raylene: Bran, Sansa, Ayra, Jon

Chris B.: 1. Feel free to comment on this scene. It was my favorite scene of the episode.

Chris T.: I loved the scene. Podrick is a Kingsguard under Commander of the Kingsguard Brienne. Bronn is not remotely qualified to be master of coin. (In all fairness, how many masters of coin have really been qualified during this show? Bronn knows how to spend it. He’ll be fine. No idea how I didn’t pick up on Podrick being a Kingsguard. I’ll blame the overabundance of unsold “Jim was right” shirts for missing something so obvious.)

Jim: I was happy to see that scene, as a lightening up on the finality of it all. Absolutely my favorite scene (the representative from High Garden would support brothel repair). (It was the right amount of levity that we really needed after all the inane nonsense.)

Raylene: It was a solid scene. (I do wish The Hound had been there for it. Bronn and Davos bickering about Brothels and Sandor could have called them fooking cunts and it would have been hilarious.)

Chris B.: “I once brought a honeycomb and a jackass to a brothel….” (Gooooo on..)

Johnny: The maesters are assholes for leaving Tyrion out of the story. lol That is all. (Great point! Hadn’t considered it until now.)

Kent: Bronn and Davos owned that scene and I am happy as hell about it. Two characters that were perfect side characters that you always wanted to see, but never got overexposed and irritating at times. Good for Brienne, as well. I liked her writing about Jaime. Podrick looked dapper in his new Kingsguard armor. Sam is a good choice for Maester, whether he earned it or not is entirely debatable. I am good with it though.

2. Drogon flew away with Dany. Jon isn’t supposed to have any children. Is this the end of dragons and Targaryens, in your mind?

Chris T.: In my mind, Jon is going to go start a new Stargaryen dynasty as the King Beyond the Wall. He and Tormund are going to go suckle some giant bosoms together (I think Stargaryen would make for a hell of a name of a pro wrestler.)

Jim: Jon is a fake Targaryen, so yes, without a dragon, there are no more Targaryens (Ohhhh, Jim is getting his claws out with his fake declaration.)

Raylene: I think Jon will have kids. How are the unsullied really going to enforce the stipulations of Jon’s release? (Because within a year, the Unsullied and Dothraki will have continued multiplying and be all over the place with teleportation. Facts!)

Chris B.: Sure seems like it, but at the same time, Jon’s vows didn’t stop him before….. (I miss Ygritte a lot.)

Kent: Jon is gonna plant his seed in Meera and show her off to Bran. They were brother and sister, in my mind, anyway, and that’s the Targaryen tradition. Some rich dude just has a bunch of dragon eggs and he hands them out at weddings. Jon and Meera will get some, and you know how it will go. Meera will rise in power to overthrow Bran because he was a thankless sack of shit. There, I just wrote the next series. Add it Bronn and brothels and Davos having witty conversations with Tyrion and Sam. Boom, you have a hit show.

Final Thoughts – Who truly won the Game of Thrones in your opinion? Rationalize this however you would like. Did Bran win because he is on the throne but not wanting the job? Did Cersei win because she ruled the longest on the show? Did Robert win because he nailed a lot of whores and drank a lot? Did Gendry or Bronn win because they have a good position and are still in good shape? Did Drogon win because he melted that throne?

Chris T.: No one won. The problem the show got into other than the condensing, was losing track of the main theme of the books. Only the First book was called A Game of Thrones, because the politics were never the main point. The main theme was that there was an undead apocalypse coming and humanity was more worried over who sat on a chair rather than banding together to save all of humanity. The battle for Winterfell should have been the end not worrying over who was the ruler. One good thing George will have going for him if he ever finishes the books will be to see what people didn’t like and what they did.

Jim: Regardless of the troll hate on the internet, we won because this was an awesome series. There was no real winner or loser, and everyone who got to enjoy won. And to Chris’ point, George won the most, because he can just change the outcomes of his books to look like a better writer.

Raylene: I say Headless Ned won.

Chris B.: No one won. I think that was the point. Everyone who tried to play the game lost. Bran became king because he didn’t play.

Johnny: Ser’ Pounce won in my book. ???? (I don’t even like cats, but this may have been my favorite response.)

Kent: Drogon kinda did. He shut that shit down and said “You know what, you humans are dumb as hell. I’ma burn the one thing that seems to be driving you all cray cray. Now, I’m gonna peace out with my mom and head over to Dragonstone and pour a 40 out.” Bran also won because he really didn’t have to do much fighting to be the king. That’s pretty solid. That new Prince of Dorne won because Dornish wine is tasty. Jon won because he no longer has to follow any bullshit rules. He can just be happy. I also have to imagine that Tywin’s ghost is pretty happy that the last big name Lannister is the Hand. Also, I’m happy to see Tywin in the new Godzilla film. That cast is stacked!

Finally, I want to thank everybody who has contributed to this blog. Aside from Chris T, Jim, Raylene, Chris B, and Johnny, we had other contributors.
